Thoracentesis is normally done as a diagnostic measure to look for the cause of a pleural effusion by acquiring a sample by a needle through the chest wall. However, it can also be therapeutic to make patients more comfortable, by relieving some of the pressure on the lungs. By removing excess fluid, lung function may be improved.

Thoracentesis is an invasive procedure done under local anesthesia to remove fluid or air from the pleural space. It is done with a hollow needle (and sometimes a plastic catheter) inserted through the chest wall. Ultrasound pictures are often used to guide the placement of the needle.
